Zoey Valentine is concerned with two things: surviving the multitude of self-defense classes her dad makes her take and avoiding Ash Matthews.
That is, until the Z virus hits, wiping out a third of the population in a matter of weeks. If that weren’t frightening enough, the bodies of the victims disappear and suddenly reappear, awakened from their dead state. They’re faster, smarter, and they work together to get the one thing they crave, human flesh.
The United States is in a panic and then the government decides the unthinkable: to bomb every major city overrun with the awakened.
Now Zoey is on the run, with her dad and Ash, desperate to find a place of safety amongst the ruined remains of the country.

What would you do if your place was attacked by The Awakened?
It’s my first time to read this kind of story. Sara’s writing of the story is really a page turner. It’s heart pounding and fast paced and never disappoint me.
The story is set on New York. While there’s a prom in St. Joseph School, some students vomiting and not feeling well. Zoey is a badass, her father wants her to learn self defense even if she didn’t want to. She’s not overly affectionate nor emotional. On the other hand, Ash is always teasing Zoey and that’s why she hates him. But he’s charming.
What would you do if the person you hates the most will be the person who’s with you to find a place where there’s no Awakened?
I felt so sad whenever there’s a scene that your loved one will die. This book got me mixed emotion. You should definitely read this.
From the first page up to last it was absolutely amazing. It’s a good zombie story.
- Hi! Ms. Sara, tell me something about yourself.
Hmm. Let’s see. I really love tattoos. Its not much of a secret lol but I do. Its funny because I’m not one for pain. I burnt my finger straightening my hair this morning and I literally teared up. I’m not a pain person. So I waited until I was 21 to get it. And the pain…totally tolerable. Not that bad. And the lasting ink? I just love it. That was 6 years ago and I have 15 now and I love each and every single one of them. They are a huge part of me now. I don’t plan on stopping.
Plus most of them are book related and that’s kind of fun 🙂
- When you’re not working, what do you usually do?
Well I work a “normal” job at Starbucks which, you know, pays the bills and keeps me happy, lets me buy books. I spend a lot of time with my friends and a LOT of time doing nerdy things like going to book signings and conventions. And I read A LOT. I don’t have nearly as much time lately to read and it makes me very sad because I usually read about 3-5 books a week and I just can’t keep up anymore.
- What is your inspiration to write on your debut novel ( The Awakened ) ?
It was partly that I wanted to write my own version of the undead and partly that I wrote a short story about a zombie in someone’s front yard and thought, huh, maybe I can write something other than contemporary romance, because I didn’t think I couldn’t do it. That short story was actually transformed into a scene in the novel.
- Who is your most favorite character and can relate to? Why? How about least favorite character? Why?
Hmm. I don’t really have a favorite. I know that’s weird but its true. There’s actually a new character I’m writing in the sequel and I”m attached to her right now. But I love them all for different reasons. Even the ones that are villains, I still love them. I think Ash was one of the hardest to write. I wanted to make him annoying as hell and yet charming and I’m not sure I accomplished that. But I tried very hard.
- What will you do if your place was attacked by the Awakened?
I honestly have no idea. I’d like to think that I would grab a baseball bat or something and just start lobbing heads off. I’d like to think I’d keep my cool, fight my way out and find a place of safety. But I don’t know. I’m not the bravest of people; I squeal when I see a spider in the bathroom haha! But you know, you never know what you’re capable of when you need to be. I’d like to think I’d fight my way to safety.
- What is your advice to the aspiring authors?
Never stop writing. Write badly again and again and again. You’re going to write so many bad things but that’s okay. You only get better the more you write so just keep writing.
