book review: the last word by taylor adams

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Genre: Mystery / Thriller

Book Summary:
After posting a negative book review, a woman living in a remote location begins to wonder if the author is a little touchy—or very, very dangerous—in this pulse-pounding novel of psychological suspense and terror from the critically acclaimed author of No Exit and Hairpin Bridge.

Emma Carpenter lives in isolation with her golden retriever Laika, house-sitting an old beachfront home on the rainy Washington coast. Her only human contact is her enigmatic old neighbor, Deek, and (via text) the house’s owner, Jules.

One day, she reads a poorly written—but gruesome—horror novel by the author H. G. Kane, and posts a one-star review that drags her into an online argument with none other than the author himself. Soon after, disturbing incidents start to occur at night. To Emma, this can’t just be a coincidence. It was strange enough for this author to bicker with her online about a lousy review; could he be stalking her, too?

As Emma digs into Kane’s life and work, she learns he has published sixteen other novels, all similarly sadistic tales of stalking and murder. But who is he? How did he find her? And what else is he capable of?

Book Review:

This book sends shivers down my spine. I listened to its audiobook and narrated by Carlotta Brentan and Jim Meskimen.

The story is about Emma together with her golden retriever, Laika, whose house-sitting the beachfront house. Aside from her dog, the other companion is her trusty kindle. After reading a book and leaving a negative review, the author seeks revenge.

I couldn’t stop listening to it because this is fast paced, eerie, and scary. Picture this: you’re reading a book of a character who’s reading a book and just like every reader, wrote a book review. It felt real and the scary part is how dark the story is and has unreliable characters.

Emma, our protagonist, has reasons why she is at the beach house. Her life is forever scarred by her daughter’s tragic accident. Then he met Deek, an elderly neighbor. Like Emma, he is also alone at the house.

The plot is a rollercoaster of unexpected revelations, one after another. I thought the first revelation is enough for closing the book but lo and behold it is not. Surprisingly, as someone who looks for a moral lesson for every book read, I found this book has its own lesson.

I highly recommend this book, may it be a book or audiobook. This is an out of this world thriller novel I ever read and eagerly look forward to exploring more of Adam’s literary works.
